Game Report -
2009 Season Re-Cap Coach's Report
2009 was a difficult year for the Stoney Creek
Women’s Rugby Team(s). For a variety of reasons (injuries,
jobs, school) we lost a number of starters from the 2008 Championship
team. The schedule was also not in our favour with our toughest
games at the beginning of the season with little or no time to
recover. Enough excuses! We lost more games than we won and
finished the season in 5th place. Despite not making the playoffs
there were a number of positives that will help us to build for
2010. One of the most significant gains is our Jr players like Katelyn Putzig, Sam Warry and Steph Draper
are starting to step into leadership roles on the Senior team. This
transition is necessary and as we move towards 2010 it is these players
that will play a pivotal role in how we progress. McMaster also
continues to be a good feeder system providing us with some talented
athletes that help develop our home grown talent. Sarah Van Hoof
is a great example for our juniors and young seniors of the type of
dedication and commitment it takes to play rugby at the next
level. It is my hope that this partnership continues to grow and
benefit both teams.
Flexibility and versatility were some of the most
critical skills we needed in 2009. It was not uncommon for a
player to play more than one position in a game. One player
showed such a tremendous ability to perform at any position it was not
uncommon for her to play sometimes 3 different positions moving between
forwards and backs...thanks Vicki Woodhead! A team also needs to
have some consistency, players we could count on from week to week to
be there at games and practices without fail. We had a number of
women who made that commitment in 2009 and will continue to lead our
team by example moving forward into 2010.
Additionally 2009 saw the joining of Sonia Sennik
to the women’s coaching staff. This is a much welcomed addition
as having one coach for three teams has been very difficult.
Sennik and I will continue to grow as coaches and learn from each
other. This partnership was essential to providing continuity
through 2009 as I was called away for a couple of key games with other
rugby responsibilities. Having Sennik on board allowed me to
fulfill my Board commitments trusting the players were in good hands
and getting great instruction.
As we move towards the start of the 2010 it is
important for all our players to think about the upcoming rugby season
early. We need you come ready to work and bring a strong desire
to be the best. We have lost touch with the rugby mentality of
“she who sheds her blood with me today shall be my sister” and we need
it back. We need to start 2010 with team at the heart of all we
do. We don’t run to get our bodies in shape we run so we can be
there to support our teammate.
We
don’t make our hits so people cheer for us we make our hits to help our
teammates; we don’t score tries for glory we score tries so our team
can celebrate!
