2009 Season Re-Cap Coach's Report

Under 16
The Under 16 season started out very strong with an even amount of players from both Saltfleet and Orchard Park. The highlight of the beginning of the season was travelling to Waterloo and winning on a last second try by Paul Phalen. Through the season many of the players had to learn new teammates and play positions that they would normally not play. It didn’t matter if they were forwards or backs these boys enjoyed playing the game of rugby and were very passionate about supporting their schools and Stoney Creek Rugby.  John Crouch and Kyle Reid both led the team by example and made sure they were competitive in every game.

The second last game of the season against Brantford determined whether the boys would make the playoffs. They did not disappoint and made strong efforts to defeat a physically imposing Brantford team by 1 point. However, an early first round playoff loss was tough to handle and put an end to such a hard working season. Special thanks to all the boys who came out and played this year. It will be great to see all of you jump to the U18 level next year and for those grade 9’s who came out it will be good to see you again so we can try and improve on this years performance.

Under 18

The season began in early July, right after the devastating loss in OFSAA for most of these Saltfleet players. You could see it in their eyes; they were hungry for wins and hungry to prove they were some of the best players in the province. Led by team captain Mike Rao the boys demolished St Catharines in their first game to kick off the season. The only challenge came mid season when the Brantford Harlequins came to Stoney Creek for a mid season tilt. The boys knew they were in for a tough game. Rao and Anthony Santini began to punish their forwards and Ross Isbister and Tyron Harvey worked their magic trying to get the backs to attack. Although it was a highly contested game Stoney Creek lost 15-12.

The next week they travelled to Burlington with the loss still hurting. Stoney Creek was not going to drop 2 weeks in a row. Derek Lindenboom started off the game by scoring a try on the first play and nobody let up after that. After 4 tries in the first half Burlington was on its heels. However, in the second half Burlington made a comeback scoring twice. Rao rallied the guys and they responded with 2 more tries in the second half to seal it. At this point every player knew that this league was theirs to loose and cannot wait for that re-match against Brantford.

In the playoffs, Stoney Creek faced off against Highland. They eased to a comfortable 10 point lead in the first half and played conservatively for the win. After the win news broke that Brantford would be the opponent. Before the game the boys were rallied together to go into battle against their toughest opponent. Ross Isbister led the charge with his beautiful ball protection and passing, leading to a quick try by Kyle Kelly in the first half. In the second half, Rao scored quickly and Brantford responded. With key plays to conserve the game by Alex Houston and Tyron Harvey, Stoney Creek defeated Brantford 12-7 to take the NRU championship. Special thanks to everyone who played this season. Best wishes to those graduating and moving on the College and University. Also, special thanks to two U16’s, Tyler Krasulja and Andrew MacTaggart for stepping up huge and filling in for the final tournament.
