GARY CHAMBERS MEMORIAL RUGBY GAME
Gary was a gentle giant, a kind soul, spending his life loving, supporting and caring for his family and friends. It is no coincidence that his rugby position was a prop because that perfectly describes his character. A props job is to hold up and support other teammates and without a prop, the scrum collapses. For all of those that knew Gary, he definitely was their “prop”. Gary had an inherent passion for rugby, cherishing every aspect of the physical game, even its many bumps, bruises and injuries. Gary was a very proud member of the Saltfleet Storm Rugby team; his involvement allowed him to be a pivotal member of the 2005 OFSAA Gold Medal squad as well as travel on three different rugby tours (British Columbia, Ohio, and the United Kingdom). He was a big brother to all that knew him and if ever anybody needed help, Gary was there. He was everybody’s protector. And ironically, the boy with the big heart died of an enlarged heart on October 28th, 2005.
The 7th Annual Gary Chambers Memorial Game will be held on Saturday, June 23rd at Saltfleet High School. With the passing of another year, the time has come to share in another great day surrounded by the presence of good friends, watching some hard hitting rugby matches, and enjoying delicious barbeque. As with previous years, the Stoney Creek RFC is proud and honored to host the event, as many of Gary’s former teammates and coaches are still playing rugby with the club.
There will be plenty of rugby to observe throughout the entire day with the Stoney Creek Men battling Waterloo County and the Stoney Creek Women taking on the Brantford Harlequins. Kick off times are as follows:
Women – 12:00pm
Men’s C – 12:00pm
Men’s B – 1:30pm
Men’s A – 3:00pm
The memorial part of the day will take place prior to the Men’s A game at 3:00pm with a moment of silence honoring and celebrating the life of Gary Chambers.
There will be a BBQ set up, coolers full of beverages, along with various raffle prizes. There is no cost for the event however donations would be greatly appreciated. All proceeds raised on this day will be donated to the Heart & Stroke Foundation in memory of Gary.
